How to measure AI search visibility: A 90-day operating plan for brands

How should brands measure mentions and citations in AI search? A 20-run baseline and 90-day experiment plan for teams in Türkiye.

AI search visibility is broader than adding a column to an SEO report. A buyer using ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, or Perplexity may encounter a brand, product, or independent review without clicking the brand's page. Organic sessions alone cannot capture all of that influence.

Jason Shafton's Search Engine Journal article proposes six signals and a 90-day experiment cycle. It is practitioner guidance, not an official ranking formula. Fark Studio evaluates it against Google and OpenAI guidance and the limitations of Semrush and Ahrefs research.

The target is visibility at the decision point

Classic search teams follow a query-to-conversion chain. A generative answer may synthesize fragments from several sources. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode remain rooted in core Search systems and use query fan-out to gather related information. SEO remains relevant, but one position cannot explain a brand's full role inside an answer.

In Semrush's study of more than 500 topics, nearly 90% of pages cited by ChatGPT ranked at position 21 or lower for related queries. Rankings can still help, but passages tailored to a specific need may be selected differently from whole pages.

How should teams use the six signals?

The six areas in Shafton's framework should be treated as audit dimensions, not verified universal ranking factors.

1. Brand authority: Look beyond what the brand says on its own domain. Record how reliable third parties describe it and in which contexts.

2. Content freshness: Prices, capabilities, market coverage, and evidence need to be genuinely current.

3. Entity clarity: Relationships among the company, products, services, experts, and locations should not contradict each other.

4. Technical access: Important content must be crawlable. Clear headings, internal links, accessible HTML, and appropriate structured data can help, but guarantee nothing.

5. Cross-platform consistency: The website, video, trade coverage, reviews, and communities should support a coherent promise.

6. Earned media: Independent editorial coverage, reviews, expert contributions, and references provide evidence that is different from a brand's own claim.

Ahrefs found strong correlations between AI visibility and YouTube or branded web mentions across 75,000 brands. Correlation is not causation, so buying mentions is the wrong conclusion. Google recommends original expert content and foundational SEO instead of fabricated mentions.

The six modules represent the relationship between a brand's on-site structure and independent evidence across the web. This is a Fark Studio audit framework, not a scoring system disclosed by an AI platform.

Establish a repeatable 20-run baseline

Create a reproducible baseline before buying a monitoring tool. Select five commercial questions and run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode where available. This creates 20 test conditions.

Log the brand mention, citation, sources, accuracy, competitor rationale, and date. The article's 12-out-of-20 threshold is a heuristic, not an official benchmark. Language, location, session history, and product availability can affect results in Türkiye, so record the conditions.

A 90-day plan for brands in Türkiye

Days 1 to 30 establish the audit and baseline. Derive commercial questions from customers, sales, Google Ads queries, and Search Console. Review OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot, robots.txt, noindex, canonicals, and JavaScript-delivered content. OAI-SearchBot supports ChatGPT Search visibility, while GPTBot is a separate training control.

Days 31 to 60 run controlled experiments. A customer-led comparison on a revenue page, a refreshed expert guide, original data pitched to trade media, and a real-use-case video are separate tests. Fake profiles used to manufacture mentions create reputation and platform risk.

Days 61 to 90 repeat the prompt set and systematize what works. Read mention and citation share alongside cited sources, ChatGPT referrals, branded search, and “how did you hear about us?” responses. Repeated movement across platforms and periods is stronger than one changed answer.

This three-phase loop connects baseline measurement, controlled experiments, and scaling to a recurring monitoring process. It is a Fark Studio operating model, not a report from a specific tool.

Which metrics should drive a decision?

Citation share and mention share are useful top-line measures: across the commercial questions being monitored, how often is the brand cited as a source or named in the response? Do not merge them. A page can be cited without the brand being named, and a brand can be mentioned without receiving a link. Our earlier analysis of citations, brand mentions, and topical authority in AI search explains why those signals can present different pictures.

Supporting metrics include source quality, accuracy, answer position, competitor rationale, referrals, and assisted conversion. ChatGPT's utm_source=chatgpt.com links can be tracked in GA4, but they miss unlinked brand influence. A qualitative acquisition question helps fill the gap.

What should teams do now?

1. Fix five commercial questions and four platforms for the baseline. 2. Use one shared template for mentions, citations, accuracy, sources, and competitor rationale. 3. Include crawl and indexing checks in the SEO audit. 4. Resolve contradictions in product, expert, and service descriptions. 5. Run content production, digital PR, video, and community tests as separate hypotheses. 6. Give each experiment an owner, date, baseline, and success condition. 7. Confirm the result across repeated tests and sales evidence before increasing investment.

Where should teams wait?

AI answers vary with location, language, model version, and web access. One week of improvement is not durable evidence. Large site changes, bulk content, or aggressive PR should wait until a repeated visibility gap aligns with a commercial opportunity.

Fark Studio's view is that an AI search program should not belong to SEO alone. SEO owns technical access, content and PR create evidence, analytics owns measurement, while sales and performance marketing define the questions that matter commercially. If you want to build a 90-day AI visibility baseline and experiment plan for your brand, contact Fark Studio. The objective is not to appear in every AI answer. It is to be present accurately and credibly when the question can influence a buying decision.
